Put a sticker or X on each square as you finish. We would love to see your finished or in progress boards! Share them on Instagram (@tinytreks.explorers) or Facebook (@Tiny Treks) and tag us.
We will use a soda bottle as an example, because it is easiest and most fun for first time composters to maintain well and observe decomposing week by week. By letting sunshine in, it also speeds up decomposting a bit, too. But, any one or 1.5 liter container (Wood, metal, plastic, or a basket lined with oilcloth) will do as long as
You can poke holes at the bottom for drainage
Sides are sturdy enough for containing moisture for some months
And you can find some sort of a lid to put on top
To prepare soda bottle as a container
Remove all the labels and rinse out the bottle well. Cut the top of the bottle about 1/4 from the top of the bottle all the way around. Put aside. Make sure the bottle now has smooth edges, as your little one will place things inside the bottle.
With a pin, nail or any other kind of puncher, punch holes under the bottle. These holes need not be big but enough for water drainage.
If you use non-plastic containers, the challenge will not be how to drain it well, like in a plastic container, but how to keep the moisture in. You can use masking tape or oilcloth to line up the walls of your crate or basket.
A tray or a surface to put under the container in case water oozes from drainage holes. A spoon or a stick with long enough handle for stirring the compost pile.
